10 DIY Broadway-Themed Halloween Costumes

It’s that time of year again. The air is crisp, the pumpkins are carved, and costumers- as well as those who regularly wear them on stage- thrive.  Here are 10 DIY quick Broadway-themed Halloween costume ideas to make sure you can incorporate your passion for all things Broadway into your favorite night of the year (besides Tony night of course)!

1. Looking to portray your favorite leading lady for the evening? Try one of these!Go for the infamous Elphaba by wearing your favorite black dress, smearing some green face paint on, and pinning a fake pink flower in your hair. Or, for something more subdued, whip out some wickedly green eyeshadow for a bold eye look. Green goes with everything.

2. Have a lot of pink clothes in your wardrobe? Dress to impress at Harvard and have a pink-out as Elle Woods from Legally Blonde! Bonus points for having that kid you’re babysitting dress as your Bruiser.

3. Happen to have a cheerleading uniform lying around, or do you have a pom-pom yielding friend? Put it on for the night and rock the Bring It On look.

4. Want to wear something even kids will recognize? Be none other than a bird girl from Seussical the Musical! Rock a bright-colored dress and pin a feather boa to the waistband for your lavish tail. Add a crazy hairdo and you’re off!

5. Going for a spooky look and have an old dress lying around? Run to your nearest costume shop and pick up some fake blood. If you have the guts, pour it over yourself to be Carrie from Carrie: the Musical.

Looking for more manly attire? Here are some ideas for you!

6. Roll up some pants, wear a button-down with suspenders, and proudly wear some knee-high socks to be a dashing newsie from Newsies! Don’t forget the hat, if you have one! “Seize the day!”

7. Really in a rush? Just wear a striped t-shirt with jeans and grab a blanket to carry around for the night. Everyone will recognize you as Linus from You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.

8. Happen to have a bright blanket or robe of some sort? Own it for the night as Joseph from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.

9. Want a fun group costume? Why not go as elders from The Book of Mormon? All you need is a white button down, black pants, and a black tie. Size of the group is adjustable! Major kudos if you all rehearse beforehand to perfect harmonies in order to sing all night.

10. Wear your best black suit and opera attire to take on the role of the phantom from The Phantom of The Opera for the night. Craft stores supply white masks, or learn how to make a paper one!

And at the end of the day, if you’re really out of time, just attach a piece of paper to your shirt with the words “everyone dies: the musical” written across it. You’ll bond over Les Miserables references all night.
